Project description

Digitalisation in aviation with d-NOTAM

The goal of the d-NOTAM project was to develop and evaluate a software solution for the intuitive logging and automated processing of digital NOTAMs (notice to airmen). NOTAMs are short, hand-written messages submitted to the so-called NOTAM Office to alert aircraft pilots and other personnel to important information that could affect a flight. These include flight hazards, temporary flight or airspace restrictions, closed or otherwise unavailable runways, landing and taxiways, and other restrictions. However, despite regular adjustments, the previous NOTAM procedure is now fundamentally outdated.

In the project, HFC conducted a comprehensive requirements analysis for the setup and use of digital notifications, developed an interface for logging/capturing digital NOTAMs, and conducted the final evaluation with airport personnel who typically create NOTAMs. Our new user-centric software solution is designed to digitize the entire process of capture. This digitized process will not only save time, but modern algorithms can also avoid human errors. On the other hand, pilots no longer have to understand and interpret these previously cryptic NOTAMs individually. In the future, digital NOTAMs can be automatically represented in the electronic flight bag and thus restrictions and dangers in air traffic can be detected earlier and more safely.

The d-NOTAM project was executed in the period 2020-2022. Funding was provided under the "mFUND" (Modernitätsfonds) funding guideline by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
