HFC investigates the pros and cons of making wearing a helmet mandatory for cyclists

On behalf of the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia, HFC is investigating the pros and cons of a potential obligation for cyclists to wear a protective helmet. The goal of the study is a summarizing investigation of the relevance of cycle helmets regarding measures for the improvement of traffic safetry on the one hand, and the research of instruments used to increase the quota of helmet wearing cyclist on the other, with the latter one not necessarily being restricted to the context of mandatory cycle helmet usage.

In the course of the study, both the acceptance towards a potential cycle helmet obligation and the effects on cycling habits and unwanted consequences are looked into.

The project will run for 17 months.
