Control Rooms

Control rooms are local workspaces and control stations that are used to monitor, control and manage systems and infrastructures. We offer comprehensive human factors services for the ergonomic design of control centres in accordance with the DIN standard.

A good control room design supports the basic functions of data acquisition, processing and display of information. This enables the monitoring of processes and decision-making by control room personnel, who have to process data from plants, facilities and environments that are often located at a great distance from the control room (e.g. a power plant, traffic and transport facilities). Actions, especially in critical situations, usually have to be initiated under enormous time pressure and take into account a large amount of complex, dynamically changing information.

This places enormous demands on the presentation and visualisation of information. In this area of application, the data must be accessible in at least two ways: On the one hand, an overview must be created that enables quick orientation and a wider perspective on the situation. Secondly, details must be quickly accessible and presented precisely and comprehensibly.

Ideally, experts from different disciplines work together to optimise such a complex system for the human operator and their respective tasks: Furniture and control desks, monitors and video walls, other hardware and software equipment as well as the IT infrastructure must go hand in hand. As human factors experts, we take into account the ergonomic and perceptual requirements of the control room and its components in order to perfectly harmonise this equipment with the users. In this way, the equipment, display and operability of the control room equipment are optimally adapted to the workflow of the operators and the control task can be mastered even in critical scenarios. We offer essential human factors services that are required to comply with DIN EN ISO 11064-1, in particular the implementation of a user-centred design process with a focus on perception, cognitive ergonomics, workflow and interface design. We are able to implement almost all the principles of the ISO standard and provide support from the planning to the evaluation of user interfaces.
