Traffic Safety
Based on behavioural studies, accidents analyses and surveys, we identify traffic hazards, evaluate measures to improve road safety and design safe and sustainable mobility.
We investigate people's experience and behaviour in traffic in order to recognise hazards, identify suitable measures and make mobility safe and acceptable. We analyse accident data in order to assess the significance of accident causes. We test new technologies in the vehicle and describe how they affect the driver, driving behaviour and driving safety. We carry out behavioural observations in order to describe dangerous driver behaviour or danger spots in the traffic infrastructure and derive starting points for intervention. Depending on the issue at hand, we draw on driving studies in road traffic, in simulators or on stationary, video-based traffic observations. We develop our own methods for recognising hazards and evaluate the suitability of established methods. We support the design of new mobility concepts as a supplement or alternative to car use. We supplement objective data with in-depth interviews or representative surveys in order to describe the subjective experience of road users, their attitudes and motives and their influence on safety and mobility.
What distinguishes us and our work is our many years of experience in numerous projects with different objectives, our broad repertoire of methods, and our interdisciplinary approach in a team and in cooperation with specialised partners from the fields of accident research, traffic medicine, infrastructure and vehicle technology. Our aim is to describe the attitudes and motives of drivers and their influence on safety and mobility.
