Two Publications from the Summer Break
Over the past few months, two publications have been released that we were involved in. The contributions focus on the use of artificial intelligence for the automated creation of surgical reports and on new approaches to improving road safety for cyclists.
AI for the Automated Creation of Surgical Reports
Our work on the automated creation of surgical reports was presented at the 2nd AI Workshop of the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Dortmund. The presentation focused on both the opportunities and challenges associated with using AI to support medical documentation. A particular focus was on developing AI solutions that work in practice and can be meaningfully integrated into existing workflows.
Böhm, S., Chojecki, P., Tomotaki-Daqoud, K., Katsarou, K., Sauer, I.M., Oehme, A., Zehnder, S., & Schulz, H. (2026). KI-basierte automatisierte Erstellung von OP-Berichten - Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten bei der praxisnahen Entwicklung. 2. KI-Werkstatt: Forschung – Praxis - Arbeitswelt, Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin (BAuA), 17.03.2026, Dortmund.
Acoustic Warnings for Safer Cycling
A second publication explores how cyclists can be alerted to potential collision risks at urban intersections at an early stage. A virtual reality study investigated how directional acoustic warning signals – so-called beamforming warnings – can support cyclists in such situations. The results highlight new possibilities for providing road users with situation-specific warnings and contributing to safer urban mobility.
Leitner, R., Ende, C., Jahns, T., Rehm, M., Junghans, M., Weissig, C., & Jürgensohn, T. (2026). Can you hear the collision risk? A VR study on beamforming warnings for cyclists at urban intersections. Traffic Safety Research, 10, e000144. https://doi.org/10.55329/vtcg9685
Both publications demonstrate how research can address emerging technologies in collaboration with practice partners and connect them with concrete requirements from the worlds of work and transport.
