The goal of the project is the development and evaluation of a software solution for the intuitive acquisition and automated processing of digital NOTAMs (notice to airmen). NOTAMs are short, manually generated messages that are submitted to the NOTAM Office to alert pilots and other personnel to important information that could affect a flight. These include flight hazards, temporary flight or airspace restrictions, closed or otherwise unavailable runways and taxiways, and other obstructions.
The current NOTAM procedure is fundamentally outdated, despite regular adjustments. It has existed for decades and does not meet the state the of art. With our new user-centric software solution in the d-NOTAM project, the entire process of data acquisition is to be digitized. For the operator, this not only saves time when creating, advanced algorithms can also avoid human errors. On the other hand, pilots will no longer have to understand and interpret individually these previously cryptic NOTAMs. In the future, digital NOTAMs can be automatically represented in the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) and restrictions and hazards in air traffic can be detected earlier and safely.
The project started on 01.12.2020. It is funded with a total of 149,704 euros by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as part of the funding guideline Modernitätsfonds (“mFUND”). The companies HFC Human-Factors-Consult GmbH, m-click.aero GmbH and Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH are cooperating in this project.
About mFUND of the BMVI:
As part of the mFUND research initiative, the BMVI has been funding research and development projects related to data-based digital applications for Mobility 4.0 since 2016. In addition to financial funding, the mFUND supports networking between stakeholders from politics, industry and research with various event formats and access to the mCLOUD data portal.
