Project description
Pedelec riders and their accident history
The aim of the project, commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), was to describe the continuously growing group of users of pedelecs (often colloquially referred to as e-bikes) and their accident occurrence in road traffic. For this purpose, we conducted several studies following a literature review on the current state of knowledge. In the first part of the project, a survey for pedelec riders was designed and implemented across Germany using Marplan's online panel. The survey results provide a representative picture of pedelec riders in terms of their sociodemographic characteristics, traffic-related attitudes, traffic behavior, riding habits, and accident history.
In a second study, in collaboration with Münster University Hospital, the Clinic for Trauma surgery, Orthopedics, and Sports traumatology in Oldenburg, and the Traffic Accident Research Unit of the Hanover Medical School, we interviewed pedelec riders who had been involved in accidents on their accident history and recorded the causes and consequences of the accidents. From the overall view of both studies, insights could be gained into the motives, characteristics and behaviors of pedelec users, the vehicles they use and their accident history. In the future, these could help to improve the safety of e-two-wheeled mobility in road traffic.
