KIARA project launched

Together with our project partners Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik, Gebrüder Martin, Charité Universitätsmedizin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications Heinrich Hertz Institute, we have been working on the KIARA project "AI-based recording of work processes in the operating theatre for automated generation of the operating theatre report" since August 2022. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research for 3 years as part of the "AI-based assistance systems for process-accompanying healthcare applications" programme.

The project team is developing a system that automatically drafts operating theatre reports. This is made possible by an AI that - based on data from cameras integrated in operating theatre lights - recognises and analyses all people, objects and activities in the operating theatre and forwards the results to the operating theatre software. The system is designed to continuously learn through human feedback and simplify clinical processes by automating operating theatre reporting for the benefit of medical staff.

In the project, HFC will support the user-centred design process, particularly in the areas of user research, analysis and evaluation, as well as designing the interaction between the medical staff as users and the KIARA system - before, during and after the operation.
